In a bid to reduce dependence on non-renewable energy sources, governments of some developed countries such as United kingdom, have started investing in environment friendly bio-buses!
‘POO BUSES‘ would run on methane gas, made from human waste & food garbage!
The first attempt has been to run poo buses on greener bio-methane gas from the city of Bristol to Bath.
The 40 seats poo buses run 185 miles in one full tank of the gas, which is produced using the annual waste of 5 people.
The bio fuel is produced by the Bristol treatment company, which treats the sewage and food waste of the city.
They supply the same bio fuel to the national gas grid, which serves the cooking needs of thousands of house holds in the city.
Conventional Buses throughout the world run on compressed natural gas, which is environmental friendly too, but being a fossil fuel it is much expensive than the poo gas production.
Fossil fuels need to be extracted from under the earth’s surface, which makes it a costly source.
On the other hand, raw material required for ‘poo buses’ is readily available from the sewage lines!
Its amazing that for the first time, the very same passengers there on the poo buses might be contributing to its energy needs through their disposed off wastes and poo.
The bio gas is made up of methane gas, carbon dioxide gas and other organic materials.
It is produced in the process known as anaerobic digestion. A composition of different processes in which micro organisms and bacteria decomposes bio degradable material into methane gas using oxygen.
In some rocky areas of earth the waste organic matter decomposes naturally and thus, it does not need industrial hard work .
The methane gas produced naturally seeps through these rocks into environment. Cost can be reduced to a greater extent if these naturally occurring decomposition sites are used for bio-methane supply.
According to the engineers in Bath city, this source of energy can potentially accommodate up to 10% of UK energy needs, hence it can reduce annual fuel expenditure cost.
Further , instead of filling the land sites with garbage, now, it can be recycled for useful purposes , thus reducing the burden of extra land required for organic dump.
The poo buses idea can be effectively implemented in Asian developing countries, where there is a lot of waste dumped annually due to high population levels.
