In a bid to expand human settlements beyond Earth, Mars-one, a dutch project initiated to turn into reality science fictional stories, has planned to send its first crew of 4 astronauts by 2022.
Mars is the best choice so far for the next giant leap of the mankind owing to the fact that it is the only other planet in our solar system in close proximity to earth as well as comparable in other geological features.

Weather composition of Mars:
All the 4 atmospheric gases (nitrogen78%, oxygen21%, carbon dioxide 0.038%, argon 1%) of earth , can be found on mars, but the ratio of abundance is different there, with carbon dioxide comprising 95.32% of the total atmospheric fluid while the remaining gases are much less in amount. Oxygen accounts for less than 1%.
With the relative numbers kept in mind, humans cannot survive in mars oxygen-deficient environment , unless there is system for artificial oxygen synthesis.
Atmospheric pressure on Mars:
Air forcing us down on earth is around 1k millibar at sea level ,whereas mars has only 7 millibar. Air pressure is the primary source of abundant oxygen in low lying areas on earth. That is why low ATM on mars could not stop life friendly gas escaping out of the environment .
Weight on Mars:
Mars, being half as wide as earth or about quarter of earth’s surface area has only 0.35 the force of gravity as that on earth. It means a person there would reduce his weight by about 66%, without even food diet. If a person would try to push off the mars ground, with the same force as here, he would climb thrice as high there. Running there would be like that of a deer, which takes giant leaps while running.
Temperature differences between Earth and Mars:
Mars is around 1.5 times as far as earth from the sun. Solar radiation reaching there is less intense to warm up the martian surface than earth. Its average temperature is -60 Celsius, same as uninhabited antarctic region in the south pole of earth. Average earth temperature, where the population lives is, however, not greater than 20 centigrade .
Calendar differences between Earth and Mars:
Surprisingly both the neighbors have approximately the same 24 hour long day. The closest similarity between the two!.
How short is the day on any planet depends on how fast the body rotates around its own axis. Year, however, is 687 days long, greater than earth 356 days. The red planet being far from the sun has lengthier orbit to complete its period.
Seasonal variations between Earth and Mars:
Both the planets are tilted by approximately 25 degrees about their axis. It means, theoretically, the martian land must experience the same 4 seasons as that on earth.
Food resources on Mars:
Earth is all full of food stuffs, vegetables, where as its partner, having no on surface liquid water, has none. Humans traveling there would have to produce their own food to survive. The red planet, only has water ice in its polar caps or liquid water beneath its rocks.
